The Florida General Standards (Core) applicator exam is regulated by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) under Chapter 487, Florida Statutes — applicants seeking pesticide-applicator certification under Chapter 487 generally must pass the Core exam plus the applicable category exam. Florida administers roughly 9,000 pesticide licensing exams per year (UF/IFAS, 2020).

About the Florida General Standards (Core) exam
The Core exam tests the foundational knowledge every Florida pesticide applicator needs, whatever category license they pursue. It is based on the EPA National Pesticide Applicator Certification Core Manual (2nd edition) — 12 chapters:
- 1. Pest Management
- 2. Federal Pesticide Laws and Regulations
- 3. Pesticide Labeling
- 4. Pesticide Formulations
- 5. Pesticide Hazards and First Aid
- 6. Personal Protective Equipment
- 7. Pesticides in the Environment
- 8. Transportation, Storage, and Security
- 9. Emergency or Incident Response
- 10. Planning the Pesticide Application
- 11. Pesticide Application Procedures
- 12. Professional Conduct
The Florida layer
On top of the national manual, the Florida Core exam tests Florida-specific law and rules: Chapter 487, Florida Statutes (the Florida Pesticide Law — certification, licensing, and restricted-use requirements) and Florida Administrative Code Chapter 5E-9 (including 5E-9.023 general certification standards, 5E-9.026 exam procedures, 5E-9.032 applicator recordkeeping, and 5E-9.034 direct supervision). FDACS also publishes additional study material through its Pesticide Certification Section, and UF/IFAS publishes Applying Pesticides Correctly (SM 1) as the Core study manual.
Exam format
50 multiple-choice questions, 2-hour time limit, 70% required to pass, administered closed-book (FAC 5E-9.026). Scores are valid for 12 months. Exams are offered in person at county extension offices and via online remote proctoring.
